The Time+Tide Team picks their favourite watches from the 82nd Golden Globe Awards
Time+TideEarlier this week, the 82nd Golden Globe Awards took place in Beverley Hills, California, a typically star-studded awards ceremony for excellence in film and American television productions of 2024. It was a particularly momentous Golden Globes: a return to form after the COVID era, as well as thanks to the stand-out performance of host Nikki Glaser, the ceremony’s first-ever solo female host and a refreshing change of pace from the disappointing performance of last year’s host Jo Koy. In particular, Emilia Pérez, with ten nominations, became the most nominated comedy or musical film in Golden Globes history (who said musicals were dead?) as well as the first non-English-language film to win Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

But we’re not here to talk about the awards or the frocks, we’re here to talk about the clocks. Or rather, the watches. We kept a beady eye on all the stars’ wrists at the 2024 Golden Globes, and predictably, there was some real heat on attendees’ wrists. We’ve rounded up the watches that most spoke to us – head to our Instagram to see even more of the best watches worn by the glitterati.
Jamie’s pick: Sebastian Stan’s vintage Cartier Fabergé
Sebastian Stan’s acceptance speech was one of the highlights of this year’s Golden Globes ceremony. The Romanian-American actor, who won Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for his starring role in the thought-provoking black comedy A Different Man, was visibly emotional during his speech, delivering a powerful message about the importance of inclusivity and visibility in the film industry – a class act. Something else classy that Stan did on the night was wear a vintage yellow gold Cartier Fabergé on his wrist, the dial of which has aged to a dark creamy gold. First introduced in the ’70s but currently absent from Cartier’s range, the Fabergé combines a gentle tonneau case with hidden lugs, emphasising its shapeliness.
Russell’s pick: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s IWC Eternal Calendar
This was probably the biggest snub from our favourite watches of 2024 write-up, and to see it out in the wild makes me feel even worse about not having it for my pick. Upon the Eternal Calendar’s release at Watches and Wonders, this was one of the few watches that gave me real reason to pause, and not only as I tried to wrap my head around the complex mechanisms inside that won a Guinness World Record and the Aiguille d’Or at last year’s GPHG. But the main reason I was drawn to this pick, out of all the watches we saw on this year’s Golden Globes red carpet, was that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s herculean wrists make this 44.4mm case look like a diminutive dress watch. This to me is exactly how this watch should be worn, under the brightest lights, on the wrist of the biggest movie star in the world. While I will still need Brian Cox to explain how it works, I don’t think there is anyone better than The Rock to wear it.
Buffy’s pick: Nicole Kidman’s vintage Omega cocktail watch
Nicole Kidman leads an astonishing career that is ever-evolving, and I’m always excited to see her name attached to any project. But before I start gushing about my personal favourites in 2001’s Moulin Rouge or 2022’s The Northman, I’d better focus back on the watch. To be honest, nothing else came close to this one in my eyes. She wore a 105-year-old Omega cocktail watch that’s a pristine example of Art Deco jewellery and diamond stone setting. The shroud case made from solid platinum is decorated with intricate filigree textures within strong geometric foundations, surrounding a lovely tonneau dial. The dial itself, darkened with age, is completed by whimsical Arabic numerals and heat-blued hands.
Borna’s pick: Jake Gyllenhaal’s Cartier Tortue
Nominated for the Best Performance in a Television Series – Drama for his role of Rusty Sabich in Presumed Innocent, Jake Gyllenhaal was another star who chose Cartier. The vintage-inspired Tortue in yellow gold was a silent winner of Cartier’s Watches and Wonders 2024 offering, going back to the model’s 1920s roots and a simple, Breguet-handed dial. This is exactly the kind of place you’d expect a watch like this, and there’s little more than can be said about its understated elegance. A cool tidbit I noticed: the watch is supplied on a dark blue leather strap out of the box, meaning that Gyllenhaal’s styling team (or someone from Cartier) swapped it onto a much more suitable black strap. Nice move.
Zach’s pick: Kieran Culkin’s Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Shades Terracotta 38mm
Honestly, Borna stole my pick… Or, rather, beat me to it. But I was also thrilled to see Kieran Culkin (who smashed it on Succession and deservedly won the Golden Globe award, sorry Jeremy Strong), wearing an Aqua Terra Shades Terracotta, as this is a model and collection I’m confounded to not have spotted more in the wild. These watches are Datejust destroyers, and coming from the owner of a Datejust 36, that means something. With no Cyclops-magnified date at 3 o’clock and an unmagnified framed date at 6 o’clock instead, I do wish Omega had colour-matched the date discs or excluded them entirely. These coloured dials are superb, and all have twists on familiar hues, though the red of the terracotta model has always spoke to me most. Great size, great on-the-fly micro-adjust bracelet, and of course, a great METAS-certified Co-Axial, in-house movement.
