Do the updates in the new Atelier Wen Perception V3 justify its near US$5K price tag?

Today, the Atelier Wen Perception V3 makes its debut. So, what’s new? Well, first, let’s catch everyone up. Atelier Wen came on the scene in 2018, but really broke through with its Perception design in 2022, catching the eye of watch collectors by bringing handcrafted dials into a daily-wearer spec’d design at a more approachable price point. For a Kickstarter price of just above US$2,000 and a standard retail price of just above US$2,500, buyers were able to get a watch billed with an engine-turned dial, guilloché performed by a master artisan in China, inside of a 100-metre water-resistant stainless steel watch with an integrated design and a Chinese movement inside to keep the retail price down.

The Chinese calibre made complete sense, one, from a cost-effective perspective, and two, from the perspective of the brand’s mission to blend Chinese artistry and handcraft into contemporary watch design. V2 came a year later in 2023, subtly refined based on the brand’s community outreach and a survey with 400 responses identifying what Atelier Wen buyers would like to see revised – a more pronounced bracelet taper, a smaller folding arm on the clasp, and more. I love the fact that, in proper microbrand-besting-big-box-brand fashion, Atelier Wen made the effort to collect feedback and, moreover, implement it. And this V2 made the jump up to a retail price of US$3,288.

Now, a natural progression for watch brands, typically speaking, is to move upmarket. The question becomes: what will the brand do to justify it? What new developments will the brand bring to the table? This Atelier Wen Perception V3 has a retail price of US$4,850, around twice the price of the design’s initial retail price. So, what is Atelier Wen now bringing to the table? And, is it worth the jump up in price? Well, the most major update, to answer the first question, is a new calibre. The answer to the second question, or at least my answer, we’ll hold off on until the end.

The case

The new Atelier Wen Perception V3 904L stainless steel case, at first glance, will look largely unchanged, and that is because it has largely been left alone. With a diameter of 40mm and a lug-to-lug span of 47mm across, those two metrics are exactly where most people would want the diameter and lug-to-lug of their daily-wearer, stainless steel integrated design to be. The brand claims it wears more like a 38mm or 39mm watch, which is as confusing as looking at your weather app to see it’s 60 degrees Fahrenheit outside, but it feels like 55 degrees. Well, which one is it then? Or, which is more important: what it is or what it feels like?

Jokes aside, the statement is fair, because on the wrist it does have a presence closer to a 38/39mm watch than a 40mm watch – surprising because many integrated designs are often described as feeling larger on the wrist than their stated diameter dimension. I think the lug profile is what drives this feels-smaller element; the angle of the slope is more downward rather than extending further out. Its compact, curvaceous, scalloped form results in a wrist presence I feel both smaller and larger wrists can enjoy equally. And this was always the case, but one thing has changed slightly.

The thickness of the V3 is now listed at 10.4mm, one millimetre higher than what we have seen previously. Being under 10mm is quite a badge of honour in the integrated design segment, but the likely culprit for the 1mm increase in thickness stands to be a welcome trade-off. But more on that in a bit.

Beyond the millimetre increase in thickness, the other evolution you will notice as you look closer is the step up and switch up in finishing. As Atelier Wen describes it, you will find more directional brushing and elevated bevels that are performed on a lap machine on the V3 ice blue dial and salmon dial variants. But, for the new bamboo green hue making its Perception collection debut, the typically brushed finished surfaces are micro-blasted – making the design feel even more contemporary and accentuating the mirrored bevels even further.

The dial

Aside from the new bamboo green hue, the Perception, as it must, based on the precedent it has set and maintained, has a handsome-coloured handcrafted dial that really catches the eye. There is a mint-meets-aqua quality to the hue, its signature fish-scale engine-turned surface, which Atelier Wen states takes eight hours to execute, once again bringing a luxurious texture and depth to the dial. It is worth noting that this is the first new dial for the core Perception line in four years since it debuted.

For those less familiar, Atelier Wen, inspired by ancient Chinese design principles, applies its hour indexes through friction alone, without nails or glue. Each index nestles into precise cutouts in the dial and is locked in place by an elevated chapter ring. This ring, right where you see a traditional Chinese geometric motif acting as an outer minutes track, is also printed in Super-LumiNova, joining the central hours and minutes hands as a third element that glows in the dark for visibility.

The bracelet

The bracelet of the Atelier Wen Perception V3 matches its case, which means that the new bamboo green variant fluidly continues the microblasted primary finish and polished accent lines to the surfaces of the bracelet. The bracelet has a nice modern-meets-classic taper, dropping from 22mm at the lugs to 18mm at the clasp. The links also gradually become thinner towards the clasp, reducing their thickness from 3mm to 2.6mm to keep as slim a profile as possible throughout. It is a very comfortable and wearable bracelet, with a patent-pending on-the-fly micro-adjustment system activated by the Atelier Wen logo in the clasp and a more compact folding arm for the clasp that avoids alienating small wrists with excess fixed flare.

The movement

Now we arrive at what is the most novel element for the Perception V3: a new French automatic movement in place of a Chinese calibre. The distinct movement you see above is a customised version of the Pequignet calibre EPM03. And distinct and customised are the operative words. I like that Atelier Wen did not simply take the EPM03 as it already was and just stick it inside.

Atelier Wen explains that the bridges are shaped in the traditional Chinese representation of wind and filled with mirror-polished blue aventurine lacquer across three-quarters of their surface – creating the visually intriguing starry night sky effect. Further elevated finishing than what we have seen before includes Côtes de Genève on the escapement bridge, a laser-etched inscription on the ratchet return wheel, black-polished screws, machine-made anglage, perlage, a snailed mainspring barrel, and a rotor decorated with both snailing and frosting. And in terms of performance, the 65-hour automatic calibre is regulated within chronometer standards, accurate within +6/-4 seconds per day.

As someone who never particularly loved the quarter-view exhibition caseback but understood why it was there, I am so glad to see not only a full exhibition caseback but a calibre genuinely worthy of it.

The verdict

These days, with so many watch buyers complaining about price increases, it is a big risk for Atelier Wen to bring its staple collection up into a new price tier. For me, it boils down to a simple equation. What has increased more? The cost or the number of compelling elements? Between the elevated finishing of the case and bracelet, and the highly customised calibre that brings a much more compelling caseback aesthetic, I think it would be ridiculous for us to expect such upgrades without a noticeable price rise. There is a reason you likely have not seen someone use aveturine lacquer on the bridges of a movement. It’s definitely not because it’s ugly; it’s because it’s challenging and by no means straightforward to execute well.

For those who had yet to pull the trigger on earlier Perception watches, wishing future iterations would be mere colour introductions at the same price point, there may be some disappointment. But I think we can all understand a brand’s desire to bring growth and development to its pieces. In this instance, I am all for every upgrade and refinement and its new cost of admission. You’re still getting a lot of handcrafted elements for the dollar, and Atelier Wen have kept the pricing close to the Ancestra, also Pequinet-driven, without racing close to Inflection pricing – it’s most upmarket design. This is a Perception that can tempt both owners of previous Perception watches and newcomers as well.
