Fears teams up with Andrew Morgan to give its Jump Hour a proper send-off with new “Ultimus” model

Even though Fears has greatly expanded its offerings since its modern reincarnation in 2016, the brand’s Brunswick Jump Hour model has become synonymous with the brand in the three short years since its unveiling. The Brunswick Jump Hour was developed between Fears and fellow British brand Christopher Ward, as part of the Alliance of British Watch and Clock Makers. Released in 2023, the watch brought Fears’ Brunswick case to the table and utilised Christopher Ward’s in-house jump-hour module. Despite the success and notoriety, all good things must come to an end. Fears has brought in another British watch personality, Andrew Morgan, to help design the Brunswick Jump Hour’s swan song, producing the Andrew Morgan Watches x Fears Brunswick 40.5 Jump Hour ‘Ultimus.’
The watch takes the 1920s Art Deco influences that have been a cornerstone for Fears’ design language, and introduces modern touches that make it the most adventurous Fears Jump Hour to date. The case of the ‘Ultimus’ remains the same as previous iterations, featuring a 40.5mm x 38.5mm 316L stainless steel cushion case, measuring 12.8mm thick (including the domed sapphire crystal with Ardur anti-reflective coating on both sides) and 47mm lug-to-lug. The onion-shaped crown is a clear nod to the 1920s influence, and is engraved with the Fears cypher. The back of the case features an open caseback with a sapphire crystal, and the Andrew Morgan Watches logo on the underside of a lug.
The dial is where things get interesting. The immediately apparent monochromatic display recalls pocket watch dials from the early 20th century. The gradient surrounding the outer edge of the hour disk references domed dials of early wristwatches. The dial design draws heavily on historical influences, but the construction is thoroughly modern.
The dial is constructed of three sapphire elements placed above the jump-hour display. The centre of the dial features the black minute hand against a textured surface made of luminous ceramic. The minute track is printed on a semi-transparent frosted surface, partially obscuring the view of the jump-hour disc below. At 12 o’clock, there is a magnifying window for the jump-hour display, a first for the Brunswick 40.5 Jump Hour collection.
Not only is the centre disk made of luminous ceramic, but the hour disc is also fully lumed, making the entire dial a radiant blue display in low light. Daytime presents the more traditional sides of the ‘Ultimus‘, while nighttime reveals its more modern personality.
As with other Fears Brunswick 40.5 Jump Hour models, the ‘Ultimus‘ is powered by the Christopher Ward JJ01 jumping hour module on top of a Sellita SW200 base. The movement has automatic winding, 25 jewels, a 38-hour power reserve, and operates at 28,000 bph. The automatic rotor is customised by Fears, and is decorated with the ‘Bristol Flower.’
Securing the Fears Brunswick 40.5 Jump Hour ‘Ultimus’ to the wrist is an ‘obsidian black’ Epsom calf leather strap. Fears also offers the watch on its Brunswick 5-link stainless steel bracelet, a set which includes the calf leather strap.
Surprisingly, Fears is ending the Brunswick Jump Hour, but this collaboration with Andrew Morgan might be the model line’s magnum opus. Between Andrew Morgan’s ‘The Red One’ with Christopher Ward and this latest collaboration with Fears, I would say Mr Morgan has a knack for helping develop some of the coolest modern timepieces. Plus, the watch world apparently needs more people named Andrew championing independent watch brands.
