We hosted the launch of the Formex Aria and dove deep into this new Manufacture Chronometer
Time+TideThere are brands that talk about stepping up, and then there are brands that actually do it. Formex, the Swiss independent that built its reputation on genuinely chronometer-certified value propositions, has just done something brave – higher risk, but higher reward. Formex has launched its first manufacture calibre-driven watch within its first ultra-thin integrated design: the Aria Manufacture Chronometer.
We had the privilege of hosting the launch at the Time+Tide New York City Discovery Studio, with Time+Tide Editor Zach Blass taking the stage with Formex CEO Raphaël Granito and David Sharp, COO of Horage. What followed was one of the more technically dense — and genuinely exciting — watch conversations we’ve had in the Studio in recent memory.
A fifth collection, and a statement of intent
To understand why the Aria matters, you need to know where Formex has been. Four core collections — the Essence, the Reef, the Stratos, and the Field — each punching above their weight in finishing, specs, and value. But a manufacturer calibre? That’s a different mountain entirely.
“We started from a completely blank sheet,” Granito told the room. “We really wanted to play our hand at an integrated bracelet watch.” That process took two and a half years, realised with its movement partner Horage — the brand’s “really dear friend and neighbour” — and the result is a 40mm, fully integrated titanium sports watch that measures just 6.9mm thick with a top-notch micro-rotor movement inside. At 45mm lug-to-lug and weighing only 78 grams complete with bracelet, it sits in a very rarified space for a watch of this mechanical ambition.
The design language: Nature as a blueprint
In a category saturated with angular, architectural integrated bracelet watches, Formex took a deliberately different path. The inspiration? Rocks shaped by water over centuries — surfaces that begin sharp and slowly yield to something rounder, smoother, more inevitable. “We wanted to get inspired by forms shaped by nature, by the elements,” Granito explained. “A rock that’s been sitting in a riverbed for hundreds of years starts out very sharp and gets shaped slowly into something more smooth.” That philosophy extends all the way to the dial, where scalloped ridges behind the indexes were inspired by the wake pattern water creates flowing around rocks. The dial itself is fully stamped, then treated with a fine wet sandblasting process before lacquering — a real manufacturing achievement given the watch’s ultra-slim profile.
The calibre: Horage K2, elevated
Now, to the movement — because this is where the Aria earns its credentials with a very smart team-up. The Horage K2 calibre at the heart of this watch is not a static design. It’s been iteratively refined since its 2020 introduction, and the version inside the Aria represents its most advanced expression yet with all the latest tech Horage has at its disposal. The headline specifications are strong: 72 hours of power reserve, COSC chronometer certification, full silicon escapement with a proprietary hairspring, escape wheel, and pallet fork.
Horage is also well-known for its efficiency story around the micro-rotor — historically the weak point of any slim movement with a smaller winding mass. “Roughly one hour of wear will equate to circa 10 hours of power back into the main spring,” Sharp explained. “We’ve gained approximately 55% efficiency in winding technology within this calibre.” That’s not marketing language — that’s a meaningful engineering outcome.
But what really caught our attention in conversation with Sharp was the calibre’s flexible geartrain pinion created using LIGA. It’s a MEMS-derived process — lithography, galvanoforming, and moulding — that produces flexible-toothed gear wheels capable of maintaining constant contact without tolerance-induced quiver. If you’ve ever set a fine watch and watched the seconds hand tremble as it catches, you’ll understand immediately why this matters. As Sharp put it: “You’ll never want a watch that doesn’t have it, once you have this on.”
The details that matter
Six millimetres of micro-adjustment on the clasp. Quick-release tabs on the underside of the bracelet. A case and bracelet built entirely in Grade 5 titanium for that featherlight 78-gram wearing experience. Three dial colourways for the Founders Edition — Denso Blue, Selva Green, and Ardesia Grey — are available across just 100 numbered pieces, with delivery slated for September. Subsequent batches won’t arrive until spring of next year. The price: US$7,900. For a manufacture-calibre, COSC-certified, full silicon-escapement integrated titanium sports watch — in 2026 — that is a number worth sitting with.
The Bigger Picture
Formex has always played a long game. They launched on Kickstarter in 2018, earned credibility the hard way, and have been methodically building a brand that over-delivers at every price point. The Aria isn’t a departure from that philosophy — it’s its fullest expression. A manufacture movement watch that costs less than most Swiss brands charge for a solid bracelet alone. The Aria doesn’t announce itself loudly. It doesn’t need to. Like the rock in the river that inspired it, it lets form do the talking.
