Alpina turns back the clock with its retro-inspired Heritage Tropic-Proof Handwinding
Tom Austin- Alpina has released the Heritage Tropic Proof Handwinding, a faithful rendition of its original 1960s classic.
- Remaining faithful to the old design, the new watch is sized at 34mm and features a manually wound movement.
- This retro-inspired launch comes in two dial variants, offering a choice between either a shiny white or shiny black dial finish.
Alpina has a deep history rooted in Swiss watchmaking, and after celebrating its 140th anniversary in 2023, its Heritage line was launched, ushering in a selection of watches reissued from Alpina’s back catalogue. The brand has slowly added watches such as the Heritage Automatic and the Heritage Carreé to the collection, and now, in 2025 at Watches & Wonders, Alpina has released a new retro-inspired, hand-wound classic to its line-up, the Heritage Tropic-Proof Handwinding.
It’s not uncommon for watch brands to call back on their history, and rightfully so, many of these pieces helped shape not just the brands themselves but the Swiss industry into what it is today. The mid-20th century was a time when brands unknowingly laid the foundations for the style and function we rely on now. Alpina certainly played its part in this with several watches, and the Tropic-Proof has gone on to become a niche selection for vintage connoisseurs everywhere. Alpina’s latest release stays incredibly faithful to the original design, to the point that if it had been given the fauxtina treatment, you’d swear it was the original itself.
Often when brands reissue old classics, dimensions are adjusted to suit the current trends. No such silliness here. The Heritage Tropic-Proof’s case almost seems undersized: 34mm in diameter, and at just 9.25mm thick, it’s definitely not a large watch by any stretch of the imagination. In fully polished stainless steel, it remains faithful to the original, maintaining the inconspicuous proportions. This isn’t a negative, though; I love the fact that Alpina has said to hell with making this watch bigger and distorting the message; if we’re going to do this, we’re doing it properly.
The case remains true to the old model throughout, featuring slim, tapered lugs, a thin bezel and a slim crown. Atop the case sits an anti-reflective glass box sapphire crystal, giving the edges of the dial that vintage-style distortion, and an engraved screw-down case back provides the watch with a 30-metre water resistance rating.
The Heritage Tropic-Proof is available in two dial variations, and on watches like this in the 1960s, options were pretty straightforward. Alpina has kept that the same here, offering either black or white dials, both with a gloss finish. The dials feature silver-coloured, claw-like hour markers paired with matching dauphine hands, and the only hint of faux patina is in the lume, as Alpina opted to use a beige-coloured LumiNova. I can forgive this, it suits the watch, particularly in the black variation.
The historical Alpina logo sits at 12 o’clock and finishes off the simple dial well. This is just a time-only watch, so there is no date window overfilling the dial, and it maintains the vintage-inspired look by being elegant and clutter-free.
Keeping the historical theme running, as the name suggests, the Tropic-Proof Handwinding is powered by a manually wound AL-480 based on the ETA Peseux 7001, offering a 42-hour power reserve and a 28,800vph beat rate. It makes perfect sense for a watch like this to run a simple, hand-wound mechanical movement, and it does the job well.
The watch is finished off with a beige Alcantara strap with tone-on-tone stitching and secured with a stainless steel pin buckle, which suits either dial variation very well, and it looks like the widely spaced lugs would fit a multitude of straps to suit your style choices.
The Alpina Heritage Tropic-Proof is a solid call back to Alpina’s past and a faithful reissue of a classic watch that retains its vintage charm. If you love vintage watches but want reliability and that wear-and-forget convenience, the Tropic-Proof is a solid choice. Don’t let the 34mm size put you off, either; it’s part of the Tropic-Proof’s charm. Watches like this aren’t about making a loud statement, but the subtlety of the Tropic-Proof delivers a statement of its own.
